Tether is moving deeper into bitcoin mining infrastructure with a new class of modular, high-density systems designed to give operators more control over energy use, cooling and performance. The company said it is working with Canaan Inc. (NASDAQ: $CAN ) and ACME Swisstech to build mining systems around application-specific hash board modules rather than fully assembled, off-the-shelf rigs.

Large-scale mining has become a business where hardware design, power costs and thermal efficiency can matter almost as much as bitcoin's price. Tether's approach separates compute from power and enclosure, allowing each layer of the system to be tuned or upgraded independently. The design is optimized for immersion cooling, although the company said other cooling systems are also being developed.

That shift is meant to solve a practical problem in mining operations. Traditional rigs are usually built as fixed units, which ties performance, cooling and replacement cycles together. By breaking that structure apart, Tether says operators can replace individual components, adjust output based on real operating conditions and improve system availability without replacing entire machines.

CEO Paolo Ardoino said most mining infrastructure is still built as "sealed, fixed units," making it expensive to scale and inefficient to run. He said Tether is "revisioning that concept" through modular compute that can be tuned, upgraded and cooled independently. Canaan CEO Nangeng Zhang said the collaboration reflects growing demand for modular, high-performance hardware that can be integrated into customer-designed systems.

The project builds on Tether's earlier work around its open-source Mining OS and Mining SDK, extending that control-first approach from software into hardware. For Tether, the broader point is clear: the company is not only investing in bitcoin and mining exposure, but also trying to shape the infrastructure that determines how efficiently that mining can run at scale.

Canaan Inc. (NASDAQ: CAN) stock is currently sitting at $0.48 U.S. per share while Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC ) is trading at $75,800 U.S. per digital token.
