Total shipments of cement from the U.S. reached an estimated 8.91 million metric tons in May of this year, a 7.5% year-over-year decrease, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. Year-to-date cement shipments through May totaled 37.9 million metric tons, a 6% decline compared to the same period of 2024. Masonry cement shipments also experienced a downturn, totaling an estimated 190,000 metric tons in May 2025, down 6.5% from the previous year. Year-to-date masonry cement shipments have fallen 8% from 2024 levels. On the flipside, cement imports totaled 2.51 million metric tons in May of this year, a marginal increase from 2.50 million metric tons in May 2024. However, year-to-date cement imports totaled 9.81 million metric tons, reflecting a 4.7% decrease from the previous year. Analysts blame the decline in cement exports and imports on uncertainty caused by American tariffs, which has led many companies and governments to put off major capital expenditures and infrastructure projects.
